Scarlett T's rainbow fun

Thank you Jan for sending this through - I am sure lots of others would like to try this at home too!

Making Rainbows

We made a rainbow out of a piece of card, a glass of water.

  1. I put the card on the floor in a sunny spot beside a window.
  2. We put the glass of water on top of the card.
  3. When we lifted the glass up and the sun shone through the water, a rainbow appeared on the paper.  It was small at first and got bigger when the glass was lifted higher.
  4. Do you know that when the sun shines through water it bends the light to make rainbow shapes?

  1. What a cool experiment Scarlett! Isn't it amazing how water can bend the sunlight into rainbow colours and shapes?! I really like how you have drawn a picture and written some sentences about it too! Awesome job, keep it up!:)

  5. Hi Scarlett and family, Thank you for sharing this cool activity, we've just tried it too and it worked :) Hana however has a question that I cannot answer - "How can I make the rainbow a lot bigger? What we have here is too small, Mum..." ^_^;;
